The End of the World as We Know It

5 comments:
As hard as it is to believe, this is the last day of February 2012. That means the last of the #29in29 challenge.

How sad.

It's really been fun (and sometimes painful) stretching the limits of creativity to do a post a day, with pictures, for 29 days straight. It was supposed to be motorcycle-related. But the coolest thing about the challenge was that there really were no rules. Sometimes, my images were not exactly exciting. Other times, I succeeded in finding something cool to share.

Today, on the last day, I am feeling completely uninspired. I just finished reading all of the other participants' final posts, too. (See those links at the end of this post? Have you visited them yet?)

Alas, it's the last day, so I have to post something. If it weren't cold and rainy, I'd grab the camera and take the dogs for a walk. Since it is cold and rainy, you get to see this...

My dogs taking advantage of yesterday's sun.
And...

Cool bug candle, purchased at Cracker Barrel. (They sell some weird stuff.)

Way to go out with a bang, eh?

Oh, wait. Did you see today's Google doodle? Or whatever they call those things.

I have no idea who Gioachino Rossini is, but you know I love the image, right?

Finally...

That's a snippet from Fuzzy's blog header. She was the inspiration for this whole #29in29 thing. She's a very cool chick with an awesome blog that really isn't very girlie at all. Aside from all the pink. Really. Guys love her blog, too. She and her soon-to-be-hubby are motorcycle fanatics, and Fuzzy always has great pics and cool tales to share.

Go check it out. I dare you.

And, when you are finished, check out the links below, too. I have met some very cool folks through this #29in29 challenge.

Thanks, Fuzzy. I look forward to the next adventure!

Let the Planning Begin

5 comments:
A couple of years ago, Hubby and I did a motorcycle trip of a lifetime. We spent a week on an Edelweiss tour riding through Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. After that, we visited some friends for a few days in Switzerland. Then we went to Belgium to spend the second half of our final week with friends there.

Those Belgian friends, Annelies and Yves, are the same folks we spent two weeks with last Fall, touring a bunch of US national parks in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Since they were here in 2011, it's our turn to make the trek to their neck of the woods in 2012.

I'm supposed to be planning the trip, but I have NO idea where I want to go. Somewhere in Europe, so it's not too expensive for our friends to meet up with us. I keep thinking Norway. Or Italy to ride through the Dolomites. But then there's all that amazing country in Spain. Heck, I'd be thrilled to do Austria and Germany again...

Time to put the trip planning hat on. Any suggestions?

While you're thinking about it, be sure to visit all of these other bloggers who have almost completed the #29in29 challenge.

Sights

3 comments:
Lancaster County is a very pretty area, but in many ways the eastern side of the county is like one GIANT tourist trap.

There are a couple of very large outlet malls. The small towns are dotted with country stores, antique shops, furniture stores, etc. There are farmer's markets, public auctions, Amish folks, restaurants, farms, farms, and more farms, quilt shops, trains, motels, hotels, country inns... the list is endless.

I did buy lots of cool stuff of the home decor variety. Also cooking equipment (large saucepan, cookie sheets, stainless steel utensils, etc.). Exciting, right?

There is a very wide variety of merchandise for sale there. Between all of the various stores, farms, antique shops, etc., there's no shortage of intriguing things to look at.

Rather than continue with the commentary, I'm just going to share some of those sights with you.

I'll even start off with a motorcycle.

It just gets weirder from there.

I couldn't resist joining the crowd there. :-)

I hope you enjoyed the strange little tour.

Kindred Spirit

5 comments:
In addition to a very large Amish man, I encountered another interesting person this weekend.

Sort of.

I didn't actually see an owner, but I did come across some pretty cool yard art.

When I first spotted the thing, I thought it was a mailbox. After screeching to a halt so I could capture an image for your viewing pleasure, I discovered that it isn't functional at all. It's just art.

The person who lives in this house must like motorcycles and frogs. Otherwise, why would this be in their yard?

And I thought amphibian-loving motorcyclists were rare...

Sadly, my girlfriend getaway weekend has come to an end. It was fun while it lasted. We shopped and ate. Then shopped and ate some more. It was pretty much more of the same for four straight days.

I'm exhausted, poorer, and about nine pounds heavier than when I left.

That's me about to chow down on a Whoopie Pie.

Notice the weather? That was taken on Friday. It was quite dreary.

I'll try to get caught up on other participating blogs tomorrow. For now, there's another Whoopie Pie in the kitchen calling my name.

"Famous" Amos

7 comments:
This post is especially for Fuzzy.

She's got a thing for odd roadside attractions.

Especially large things. Like Amos...

The weather here in Lancaster County today was cold. And very windy. We pretty much hurried from one store to the next. But I braved the elements for this photo op with Amos.

He stands in a restaurant parking lot near Strasburg. That's one of our favorite shopping areas.

We also had to visit Intercourse, which is one of the oddest named towns ever.

I didn't get many pics today. We were too busy shopping.

I have to tell you how I found Amos. I didn't even know he existed. But when we were leaving Burger King on Thursday, I saw a picture of him in their lobby.

"Oh my God, look!" I said to my girlfriends.

"What?"they replied.

"An Amish Muffler Man. I have to find him."

They thought I was nuts.

I Googled "large amish muffler man lancaster" and found him.

Woot!

They didn't get it. But Amos was more than happy to give me a high five when we met.

Too bad I didn't have my bike along.

Only four more days left in Fuzzy's #29in29 challenge. Don't forget to see what others have been capturing.

Girlfriend Getaway Weekend

4 comments:
I am happily ensconced in my clean-but-like-a-dive motel room in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with my two best girlfriends. We have all known each other for about 35 years.

When you know a person for that long, you really KNOW that person. Know what I mean?

Anyway, we all get together at least once a year to catch up with each other. Sometimes, during good years, we manage to get away more often.

I brought my point-and-shoot along and managed to capture some pics while drive up yesterday. It was a picture-perfect day in the mid 60s. Guess what I saw lots of?

I didn't capture a ton of motorcycle pics, but I did get some scenes from the countryside that may make some of you drool.

Really.

Maybe you should go grab a tissue before scrolling down...

Lancaster County is VERY picturesque.

That's one of my favorite barns. Even for riding in the car (or truck, as the case may be), I have favorite scenic routes. PA-896 from Oxford PA, near US-1, across through Strasburg to US-30 is one of those roads.

I have a better picture of that barn from a past trip. But I had to snag this one with the Amish buggy riding past.

Weekends can get quite busy, what with all the buggies, tourists, and road apples. But the gently rolling countryside dotted with small farms makes it all worthwhile.

There are lots and LOTS of small farms. There have to be more farms per square mile in this area than anywhere else on Earth.

There's just something about barns... Especially on days when the sky is so incredibly blue.

See the cows? I was on a schedule so couldn't stop. I'm sure I'll see more over the next few days.

This is another one of my favorite farms. It's just off of 896 in Paradise, PA.

Look, it's a buggy trifecta!

Today dawned cold and rainy. I doubt I'll capture much scenery. But Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be better.

Granpappy of Farkles

5 comments:
I just happened to be looking through old pictures yesterday when I came across one I am pretty sure I never posted.

And guess what? It's motorcycled-related.

Hubby and I saw this parked outside of the Diary Queen in Romney, West Virginia one day last summer. I'd never seen one before.

At first, I thought they were pulling a mini go cart. Then, upon closer inspection, I realized it was a trailer.

It's cute and all, but it doesn't seem very practical. I mean, if I had to lug a trailer behind me, I'd want there to be more cargo space. Then there's the price-tag, which is $3,000 or so. Really.

I even found a website in case you are interested in buying one.

Crazy.

But I imagine it does get folks talking.

Is it worth it?

Only seven days left in Fuzzy's #29in29 challenge. Visit these other folks to see if they can continue the streak, too.

Belonging

5 comments:
Hubby and I aren't what you might consider to be "joiners." We don't belong to any clubs, motorcycle-related or otherwise. We're not big on attending a rally. Heck, we don't even do much group riding. (The fact that we don't belong to a club, attend rallies, etc., may have something to do with that group ride thing, eh?)

But when we bought our BMWs, we got memberships to the BMW Motorcycles of America (MOA) club. We haven't gone to any local meetings, we didn't attend the national rally, even though it was relatively close to us, and we don't know any other folks in the area that might want to ride.

I did just renew our BMW MOA membership, however. For two reasons, really. One, the cool monthly magazine. And two, the Anonymous Book.

That's a BMW rider's little black book of like minded individuals all over the country willing to lend assistance, meet up, give advice, etc. It's a great tool to have. Especially considering how off the beaten path us riders tend to get.

My renewal packet arrived yesterday. Complete with patches and stickers.

I was happy to see the little helmet sticker. I didn't get one of those last year.

I'm easy to impress. :-)

I'm also quite susceptible to earworms.

My first thought for a post title this morning was "We Belong." Which, of course, made the following song come to mind. (Folks who grew up during the 80s are particularly at risk of catching this one.)

That song is going to be stuck in my head for HOURS. You'll have to let me know if you caught it, too.

Don't forget to see what my blogger pals are still capturing as February winds down.

If You'd Like to Make a Call...

6 comments:
I went out to dinner with my daughter, Amy, on Friday.

The company was good. The food was mediocre. But look at this delightful thing I spotted in the restaurant's lobby.

A rotary-dial pay phone. The toll was $0.10.

I should have tried to make a call, but it was about midnight when I saw the thing. I didn't think anyone I knew, locally anyway, would still be awake.

Functional or not, seeing it there still made me smile.

It's day 21 of the #29in29 challenge and I am still going strong. Or at least still going.

I can't promise any motorcycle related posts, but things should definitely get interesting here in a few days as I'll be heading north to spend time in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with two of my girlfriends.

I'm pretty sure you'll see at least one more cow picture. I bet you can't wait, right?

I'm sure my fellow bloggers are catching much more interesting stuff. Click on the links below to see what they are all up to.

A Real Driving Tour

9 comments:
The last several days have been busy ones. Wednesday and Thursday were completely consumed by work. Even into the evenings. Well into the evenings, actually, meaning I worked LONG days. That's what happens sometimes when you have to meet a deadline and things don't really come together until the very end.

Friday at work was a bit of a catch-up day. Shortly after five, I hopped into the truck and drove north into Maryland for dinner and a sleepover (as the grand kids refer to overnights) with my daughter, Amy.

Saturday morning, after breakfast and a few motorcycle shots with the kids, it was off to visit my parents. Then I went to pick up my mother-in-law (MIL) who is going to be staying with us for a few days. After a stop at Costco to stock up on some stuff, we didn't get back to Virginia until just before dinnertime.

Sunday was quite a bit more relaxing. After a nice, big breakfast of spinach-feta bread (from Great Harvest Bread Co.), over-easy eggs, and bacon, the MIL and I set out for a little driving tour.

We headed southwest out of Warrenton on Culpeper Street, which becomes CR-802/Springs Road not far outside of town. It gets really rural pretty quickly.

Because this was a discovery tour, we turned off onto several side roads to explore the countryside. This is a very pretty area. Even in winter when stuff is all brown. I can't wait until spring when things green-up.

I'll have to return to this spot to get a picture of the absolutely gorgeous, old manor home that sits close to this pond. As you can see, it was quite picturesque.

We saw lots of horses -- this is horse country -- but we also saw a lot of cows, too.

Check out the two cows in the center of the frame above, behind the little black one, butting heads.

That one was being a bit vocal.

As usual, the cows were staring at us. I just think it's funny how they stare you down when you stop to look at them.

That tannish-colored one seemed particularly interested in us. So did its pal to the right.

It even started "talking" to us.

We were going to say "moo" back, but decided to leave well enough alone and go on our merry way.

A short time later, we saw this grumpy-looking one sitting on a hill.  Really, doesn't it look angry?

I prefer this shot of the grump and a couple of friends with nothing but sky behind them.

You should have seen that brown cow whip its head around to look at us when we stopped. It was quite comical.

After a bit, we came upon this red church. It's the Jeffersonton Baptist Church. I can't remember ever having seen another red church. My MIL says a lot of churches have red doors, but she was surprised to see a red building, too.

Now, I don't usually find churches particularly interesting, but I had to do a U-turn to capture a couple shots of this one.

I can't remember having seen a country church with this particular architectural style either. According to the church's web site, it was built in 1842 "in the early Gothic revival style." The parish itself was established in 1769.

That's another spot I think I may return to for more pictures.

The Leeds Church wasn't far from Markham, which is where I managed to capture the only motorcycle-related picture of the day...

Even if the sky was a bit overcast, both of us enjoyed our driving tour.

There are 13 other bloggers participating in this post-a-day challenge. You should go visit them if you get a chance. It's rather fun looking at people's images from around the world.
